Carol Hoorn Fraser’s interest in art began early and lasted until she died at the age of sixty in her Halifax, Nova Scotia, home. She left behind a large body of work, represented in numerous collections. Her style of painting moved from Expressionism in the early years to hard-edged metaphoric oils in the 1970s to softer watercolours in the 1980s. Allergies prevented her from using oils for several years, but in the late 1980s less toxic solvents allowed her to return to her beloved medium before her death. An intellectual with an interest in literature, philosophy, and aesthetics, and a scientific training, Carol never lost sight of her Minnesota Lutheran upbringing which taught her the value of physical work, self-discipline, and frugality. Her physical passing left a void, but her work remains as an inspiration for those already familiar with it and those discovering it for the first time.
