Kathy Brown has lived and worked in Halifax, Nova Scotia since 1974. She is an Associate of the Ontario College of Art and holds a BFA and an MA in Art Education from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design.

A sailor and navigator, Kathy has sailed the coasts of Atlantic Canada for the past thirty years. The artist states: “In 1989 I began to paint watercolour landscapes about sky and weather. As the series developed, the paintings began to be about sailing the coast, storms, and passagemaking. I began to express the ocean and the land as experienced by the navigator of a small boat, and I depicted elements of the relationship between the ocean, charts, and the new electronic navigation systems. There is actual experience behind many of these paintings—sometimes I can name the day and even the hour.”
